Staining accentuates the beauty of natural wood grain, but also highlights every defect not adequately prepared. That’s why we take extra care in preparing surfaces, whether we are staining new wood, or removing a failing finish for a new coat. Stained wood can be easily damaged by harsh stripping chemicals, pressure washing or rough sanding. We always tailor our preparation to the needs of the surface, using custom chemical mixtures and soft washing when called for, or careful hand sanding. We are then able to brighten and remove some stains before carefully re-staining.

Staining often requires a different approach than painting as it hides nothing. Wherever possible, we always stain surfaces the full length or width to prevent unsightly overlap marks, even if this means more work for us. The final result is worth it.

We don’t consider a job finished until you’re as happy with the work as we are. Every job ends with a detailed walkthrough, addressing any deficiencies that may arise.

In Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, we are fortunate to have quite a long exterior season. Modern stain technology allows staining to safely occur from spring to early fall generally. The summer is the busiest time for most painters, so it is a good idea to consider booking early. We are happy to provide exterior quotes and bookings year-round for the current or upcoming exterior season.
Exterior staining introduces a number of obstacles that may need to be dealt with prior to beginning work. These include things like wasps’ nests, plants and power lines. We will note any of these during our initial visit and discuss any necessary courses of action prior to us showing up to paint. We are generally able to safely tie back most plants enough to stain, and we can move and protect most items before staining.
Paint is one of the essential barriers that protects your home from the elements. Properly prepared and painted surfaces should last for years, however, factors such as humidity, heat and UV exposure can degrade paint faster. We recommend investigating any minor splits or cracks in paints, especially on horizontal surfaces such as painted wooden steps or window sills, as even a small crack in the paint can let water enter and pool, and if gone untreated will turn a minor paint repair into a serious wood rot issue.

If your stained surfaces look faded, or become quite soggy and slippery in the rain, it’s likely time to get your staining re-done.
We’re always excited to tackle restoration projects, and are fully equipped with the knowledge and skills to effect minor repairs to any wood surfaces on your home. However, the reality is that once rot has progressed too far, replacement becomes the best course of action. We will always discuss what we think the best course of action is with you.
